Together with Nature: Colombia´s Sustainable Tourism Policy

Very few countries in the world are committed to incorporating sustainable policies and practices into the travel and tourism industry. Fewer than 15 of them have a strategy aimed at protecting the environment. Sustainability is no longer synonymous with philanthropy, love for nature, or concern for future generations. It is so much more than that. It is an essential element of the competitiveness of destinations and businesses. Those that do not invest in sustainability will benefit from some tourism opportunities in the short term, but not in the long term. Only those that make a serious commitment to sustainability will see their destinations and businesses prosper in the long term.

When I was appointed Vice Minister of Tourism in 2019, my main priority was to develop a sustainable tourism policy for Colombia. After around a year and a half, in December 2020, we published this policy under the title 'Together with Nature'. It is currently being implemented throughout the country and has become a global reference point for sustainable tourism.
